Type of nipple corrections

Nipple reduction

Nipples which protrude too much or which are too long can be congenital or a result of breastfeeding. If you suffer from enlarged or puffy nipples it may impact on your confidence and can be embarrassing when changing in public or when wearing particularly tight clothing. This can be distressing and can cause patients to cover up, often affecting their self-esteem.

Fortunately, the projection of the nipple can be corrected with this procedure that is performed under local anaesthesia.

Aureola reduction

It is also absolutely very normal for all women and men to have different sized and shaped areolas. But for some, the difference is just too much and it causes many patients to have issues with their confidence. Areola reduction surgery is a relatively simple procedure that can reduce the diameter of one or both of your areolas.

Inverted nippels

Approximately 2% of the female population may have at least one inverted nipple. The shape and size of both nipples can also differ.

Abnormalities and imperfections can affect feelings of self-worth and undermine self-confidence. In many cases inverted nipples are congenital.

There are different forms of nipple inversion:

  • A nipple can be misformed at birth and become inverted during puberty. Sometimes the surgeon has to detach the milk ducts to correct it. If this is the case then breastfeeding is no longer possible.
  • The nipple can be pulled out and permanently supported with a loop.  Following this operation, you are still able to breastfeed. The milk ducts remain intact.

WARNING: if nipple inversion occurs after puberty, especially if only on one side, you should contact your gynaecologist. It may be the first symptom of real pathology.

Suitable candidates for a nipple correction

In many cases inverted nipples are congenital. Patients can have misformed nipples since birth and they have become inverted during puberty. Other patients can have normally formed nipples that become inverted.

Anyone who suffers from abnormalities and imperfections that can affect feelings of self-worth and undermine self-confidence can find help by choosing a nipple correction at Wellness Kliniek.

Nipple correction treatment

Correcting inverted nipples is a quick and simple procedure that may be performed under local anaesthetic.
During the procedure, the surgeon detaches the shortened connective tissues causing the retraction of the nipple. the nipple is then "pulled up" and fixed in place.
The nipple can be pulled out and permanently supported with a loop.  Following this operation, you are still able to breastfeed. The milk ducts remain intact.

Sometimes inverted nipples can be so persistent that they re-invert after surgery. In this case, a nipple prosthesis offers a solution. The prosthesis supports the nipple so that it can no longer invert. This technique is only applied as secondary surgery, after all, there is always the risk that an implant will be rejected, or become infected.

Depending on the patient and the degree of nipple inversion the surgeon will assess whether or not the lactiferous ducts need to be interrupted. If this is the case, breastfeeding may not be possible after this surgery.

When performing a nipple reduction, the surgeon makes a circular incision around the nipple and removes excess skin before closing the incision with dissoluble sutures.

During an aureola reduction procedure, the surgeon removes the outer ring of the areola. The incision will be made along the border of the areola where scars will be barely noticeable. The newly shaped areola is then secured to the breast to prevent stretchering before closing the incision with dissolvable sutures.

What to expect?

The first days following a nipple corrective surgery may be a bit painful but can be easily controlled with pain medication i.e. paracetamol.

Daily activities can be resumed within 24 to 48 hours. At the Wellness Kliniek we use dissolving stitches to avoid any pain caused when stitches have to be removed.

In case you have any concerns or questions, we are there to support you day and night. Our doctors are there to advise and assist you until you are fully recovered.

An additional checkup can always be scheduled at your request and is always free of charge.
