Types of eye correction treatments:

Upper eyelid correction

An upper eyelid correction involves the removal of excess skin and fat. The surgeon can also enhance the shape of your eyes. Because the scar falls precisely in the crease of the eye, it is barely noticeable later on.

Lower eyelid correction

Sometimes the skin under your eyes can start to sag or bags will appear under your eyes. In that case, the surgeon can perform a lower eyelid correction. The incision is made right under the edge of the eyelashes and therefore results in a virtually invisible scar.

A lower eyelid correction is a relatively minor procedure but requires the surgeon to possess a great deal of experience and skill. Our surgeons are experts in the different operating techniques and know-how to achieve the most natural results.

Upper and lower eyelid correction

In some cases, correction of both upper and lower eyelids is necessary. During the consultation, you discuss all your wishes and expectations with the surgeon. The doctor will inform you whether the procedure can meet your expectations.

Suitable candidates for a blepharoplasty

As our bodies change as we age, our facial skin is no exception. Our skin gradually loses its elasticity and excess fat can gather on the upper and lower eyelids, which can cause the well known sagging eyes and make you look older. In some cases, bulging, droopy eyelids can even interfere with your vision.

Most of these symptoms are associated with age but in some cases, they can also be inherited, which means you may develop them already at a younger age.

Luckily, anyone who suffers from these symptoms can be a good candidate for a blepharoplasty. Your surgeon will be able to determine and recommend if this procedure is the right one for you. Often a combination of treatments can be recommended to achieve the best results.

Blepharoplasty procedure

Before the treatment, photographs are made for your medical file. The surgeon accurately marks on the eyelid how much skin needs to be removed. Then an anaesthetic liquid with adrenaline is injected. Adrenaline helps reduce bleeding.

Once the eye is completely anaesthetised, the surgeon cuts along the creases of your eyelids to trim sagging skin and muscle and remove excess fat.

If necessary, the orbicularis oculi muscle is shortened slightly and stitched to the bone membrane in the external corner of the eye. This technique (muscle suspension) ensures that the external corner of the eye is lifted slightly.

Lastly, the surgeon stitches the wound with an extremely fine thread and applies a couple of small plasters to the area. In some patients, the doctor uses tissue adhesive (Tissucol) to glue the skin together. An eye ice pack cools and soothes the area after your treatment.

What to expect?

After your eyelid correction you can immediately return home or to your hotel. You are not allowed to drive yourself so make sure someone comes to collect you and stays with you the first 24 hours after the procedure.

Following the treatment, you will receive your personal aftercare instructions. It is important that you follow them carefully.

You can assess the final result two months after the procedure and the scar will be virtually invisible after three months.
