You are asked to remove all pieces of jewellery before the operation. Piercings are also jewellery. But what should you do?

It is important that you tell the consultant exactly where you have piercings during your consultation. Your surgeon will then determine whether you need to remove them, if they can be replaced by a retainer (plastic example) or simply be taped off.

But why do I have to remove my piercings?

  • Because metal is an effective electrical conductor.
A lot of electrical equipment is used in the operating theatre. The presence of a piercing near the area to be treated may interfere with the equipment.
  • For safety reasons.
The piercing may, for example, be in the way of installing breathing apparatus or suchlike. The surgeon will inform you all about it during your consultation.

What if you wear microdermal piercings?

In this case a retainer is not an option. Tell your surgeon where the microdermal piercing is and if possible show it to your surgeon.  The microdermal piercing can often be taped off.

In a nutshell: it is extremely important to be absolutely open with your surgeon! Only then can he or she provide you with the right advice.
